MLB Wildcard Formula A Dreadful Distraction

In a piece I wrote after this format was announced last year, "MLB and the Widening Wildcard Window", I predicted the outcome to this grand scheme would yield a less than desirable result, unfortunately it has come to be. Jeff Passan, in his column today, "10 Degrees: Shameful that sub-.500 Phillies still contenders in wild-card race", nails the very essence of calamity this playoff system has brought to the September races across both leagues, a sideshow of hope for less than deserved contenders. A route to the playoffs that dilutes the purpose of a long and punishing regular season makes a mockery of the long standing baseball tradition of shaking out the mediocre from the contenders, the very reason for playing such a torturous 162 game schedule in the first place. With eleven teams still mathematically alive for the last playoff spots, three with under .500 records with two weeks to go in the season, this does little to add to the excitement of the game, it only distracts from the division races and offers a glimmer of undeserved hope to teams who have no business being  awarded a chance at anything but next year...
